FAQ
Upon admission to Tokyo Metropolitan University, is enrollment in “Gakkensai” or the CO-OP Kyosai Insurance Plans mandatory?
Enrollment in either plan is optional, but depending on the course, enrollment in an insurance plan such as the “Gakkensai” may be a condition for course enrollment. In particular, for practicum courses and classes that involve off-campus activities, insurance enrollment is necessary to prepare for accidents and similar incidents. If not enrolled, the course may not be taken.
For this reason, completion of the bank transfer procedures within the admission procedures period is requested.
Is “Gakkensai” eligible for an insurance premium deduction?
“Gakkensai” (including the commuting rider and the contact infection rider), Optional Liability Insurance Coupled with “Gakkensai”, and Optional Study Abroad Insurance Coupled with “Gakkensai” are not eligible for an insurance premium deduction. However, for Comprehensive Insurance for Students Lives Coupled with “Gakkensai”, only the premium for medical expense coverage is eligible for deduction.
Which insurance plan should be selected to participate in curricular internships offered by the University (experiential internships in career education courses and internships in specialized education courses)?
Either plan is acceptable.
Participation in an internship requires enrollment in both personal accident insurance and liability insurance.
When enrolling, confirm the coverage details of each insurance provider and complete the enrollment procedures.
*However, if coverage under “Gakkensai” and “Gakkenbai” is to apply to an internship, submission of the “Internship Practicum Notification Form” to the Career Support Division is required. For details, consult the Career Support Division.
Can enrollment procedures be completed after admission?
Procedures can be completed after admission as well. However, because the coverage start date will be delayed, procedures before admission are strongly recommended.
If Procedures Are Completed Before Admission
For incoming students who complete procedures (payment) by March 31, coverage begins at 12:00 a.m. on April 1.
If Procedures Are Completed After Admission
For “Gakkensai” and related insurance plans, coverage begins at 12:00 a.m. on the day after payment is received.
For the CO-OP Kyosai Insurance Plans, coverage begins at 12:00 a.m. on the day after the later of “submission of the contract application form” and “the payment date for the mutual aid contribution and Student Liability Insurance premium.”
In all cases above, the insurance end date is through the end of the applicable academic year (March 31), depending on the number of years paid.
Will the “Gakkensai” premium be refunded?
After admission procedures are completed, the “Gakkensai” premium will not be refunded for any reason.
However, a premium refund request may be submitted only in cases where payment was made, but admission procedures were not completed, or where the premium was paid twice.
