Tuition Reduction Program
To support privately financed international students with excellent academic performance, the University offers a tuition reduction program. This program is available to regularly enrolled undergraduate and graduate students of the University who hold a “Student” residence status. Those who are in the process of applying for a change to this status are also eligible.
However, in principle, the following students are not eligible:
- Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship students
- Exchange students for whom special provisions are stipulated under exchange agreements
- Students dispatched by foreign governments or other public institutions
- Students under suspension, etc.
1 Undergraduate Students
Undergraduate students who receive one of the following scholarships administered by the International Affairs Office are eligible for the tuition reduction program (for details, please refer to the International Affairs Office website):
- Tokyo Metropolitan University Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students https://www.ic.tmu.ac.jp/english/study_abroad/scholarship_pv_tmu.html
- Tokyo Metropolitan University Pre-arrival Admission Scholarship for International Students (Global Futures Scholarship: GFS)
https://www.ic.tmu.ac.jp/english/study_abroad/scholarship_gfs.html
Recipients of these scholarships will receive a 50% reduction in tuition fees.
In addition, particularly outstanding scholarship recipients may be granted a full exemption from tuition fees.
Undergraduate students are eligible for the tuition reduction program only through the scholarship programs listed above. Undergraduate students who receive either of the above scholarships are, in principle, deemed to have applied for the tuition reduction program and therefore do not need to submit a separate application.
2 Graduate Students
Graduate students who meet the academic requirements defined by the University and are recommended by the dean (or head) of their graduate school are eligible for tuition reduction. Eligible students will receive a 50% reduction in tuition fees. Applicants who wish to receive tuition reduction must submit an application to the Student Affairs Section within the designated application period for each semester.
Details regarding the application period, procedures, and required documents will be announced on the Student Affairs Section’s website at the time of each application cycle. Applicants are advised to check the latest information before applying.
Installment Payment Option
For students who have difficulty paying tuition in a lump sum, an installment payment option is available.
Under this system, tuition for each semester may be paid in three installments.
Applications for installment payments are accepted by the Student Affairs Section for each semester.
